Watchtower and barracks, Fort Steele Heritage Town, East Kootenays, BC

The fort, established in 1887 as the first North West Mounted Police post in British Colombia, was strategically located on a bluff overlooking the Kootenay River. None of the original fort remains today, but in 1969 the Province of British Columbia opened the Fort Steele Heritage Town, now a major tourist attraction in the East Kootenays. Many of the attractions are today operated by the “Friends of Fort Steele”.
